It has recently been suggested that NG 1217 formed part of a predella which constituted the base of an altarpiece the artist may have executed for the church of S. Domenico, Ferrara, in about 1490-5. If NG 1217 does indeed come from this altarpiece then the subject can be related to its overall theme, i.e. the Sacrament, with the manna being analogous to the Host - a medium for salvation.
Perhaps collection of Lucrezia d\'Este, Duchess of Urbino, and bequeathed to Cardinal Piero Aldobrandini; Cardinal Fesch after 1829; Lord Ward (later Earl of Dudley) by 1859; bought (Clarke Fund), 1886.
