NG 1157 is damaged and largely repainted. It has in the past been described as Italian(?) School, seventeenth century, and attributed to José Sarabia (1608-69) and Cavallino. In spite of its condition, the attribution to Spinelli is convincing. The provenance supports a Neapolitan origin for the picture.
Recorded as bought from a monastery in Naples by Woodford Pilkington, 1860s; by whom presented, 1884.
