This fragment was probably once part of a large fresco, perhaps of The Body of Saint Francis halted at S. Damiano and mourned by Saint Clare and her Companions. It probably comes from the Chapter House of the church of S. Francesco, Siena. Two other frescoes datable to about 1329 by Ambrogio Lorenzetti from the Chapter House survive (Saint Boniface receiving Saint Louis as a Novice and the Martyrdom of Franciscan); they are now in the church of S. Francesco, Siena. Ambrogio Lorenzetti is recorded by Ghiberti and other writers as having painted frescoes in the cloister of the convent. Fragments of these have recently been discovered and it now appears that Ambrogio was involved in two fresco projects at the church.
Ambrogio collaborated with his brother Pietro (see under Pietro Lorenzetti NG 3072) on the Chapter House frescoes.
