NG 1131 was painted as part of the decoration of the bedroom of Pierfrancesco Borgherini, who was married in 1515; see under Pontormo NG 6453 for further comment. This painting was the last one in the series to be completed and was supplementary to those originally planned. It reflects the success of Pontormo\'s other, earlier, contributions and was itself also especially admired.
Several preparatory drawings are known.
In the Borgherini palace, Florence, until about 1584; possibly in the Aldobrandini collection, Rome, by 1603; collection of the Duke of Hamilton by 1854; bought at the Hamilton sale, 1882.
