On the left the infant John the Baptist, Christ\'s cousin, joins the Virgin in adoring Christ. Since the Baptist is so close to the Virgin and is not wearing his usual camel skin he could be mistaken for Christ. The cross and scroll (inscribed with words from the New Testament, John 1: 29) have been added by a later artist to avoid confusion.
NG 1093 was probably painted in 1508 as the central panel of an elaborate sculptural altarpiece for the chapel of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in S. Francesco, Milan. It was almost certainly intended to replace an earlier panel which had been commissioned from Leonardo in 1483 (now Paris, Louvre). This sequence of events has been deduced from the provenance of NG 1093, and the surviving documentation (discussed by Cannell 1984). There are numerous differences between the two versions, and NG 1093 may be in part the work of Leonardo\'s assistants. NG 1661 and 1662 were parts of the same altarpiece.
Probably the picture seen by Lomazzo in the church of S. Francesco, Milan, before 1571; bought by Gavin Hamilton from the hospital of S. Caterina alla Ruota, Milan (to which it had probably been transferred in about 1781) in 1785; Lansdowne collection, 1786; possibly in the collection of Lord Suffolk by 1818; bought from the Earl of Suffolk, 1880.
