This event is not described in the Bible, but forms part of a long pictorial tradition. Christ\'s body, which has been taken down from the cross, is embraced by the Virgin who is supported by Saint Anne(?). Saint John the Evangelist assists at the left. The Magdalen applies ointment to Christ\'s feet and two Holy Women attend; one washes his wounds and the gesture of the other signifies her grief. In the right background Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus walk away from the tomb which is neatly hewn from the rock. On the ground at the left are a ewer and basin, three nails from the cross and the crown of thorns.
This work is similar in style and dimensions to The Adoration of the Kings (NG 1079), and is thought to be from the same altarpiece. They appear to date from after 1515 and illustrate an affinity with the palette of Quinten Massys\'s paintings.
Collection of Karl Aders, 1831; bequeathed by Mrs Joseph H. Green, 1880.
