An altarpiece depicting the Madonna of Loreto (according to tradition the Virgin\'s house had been miraculously moved to Loreto) and Saints Francis and Jerome was commissioned from Perugino (and perhaps painted by him and his workshop) in 1507. This altarpiece was intended for the chapel built on behalf of Giovanni di Matteo Schiavone (died June 1507) in the church of S. Maria de\' Servi, Perugia. NG 1075 can be linked to this commission by its subject and by its provenance.
Despite the contractual clause that Perugino should paint the panel himself, recent opinion favours significant workshop involvement in this picture. The original frame for this altarpiece is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Perugia. This does not appear to allow for a predella as specified in the contract. The two angels may have been reversed from the same cartoon.
Moved from S. Maria de\' Servi to S. Maria Nuova, about 1542; removed from that church in 1821 and bought from Baron Fabrizio della Penna, 1879.
