The Coronation of the Virgin was probably painted in 1522, and was destroyed in about 1586 (when the choir of S. Giovanni Evangelista was enlarged). A number of fragments (including NG 3920, 3921 and 4067) survive, and several copies are known. Among the artists known to have copied Correggio\'s frescoes in Parma was Annibale Carracci. NG 7 - and NG 37 - have sometimes been supposed to be Annibale\'s copies, but there is no evidence to support this.
In the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden, and subsequently (by 1727) in the collection of the Duc d\'Orléans; bought with the J.J. Angerstein collection, 1824.
