The Virgin, kneeling to adore the new-born Christ in front of the stable, is larger in scale than the adoring shepherds (to the right) and the three figures, perhaps the Magi (to the left). The scrolls in the foreground abbreviate a quotation from the New Testament (Luke 2: 14), and the devils bury themselves. The inscription at the top has been the subject of much debate, but essentially links the picture to the New Testament Book of Revelation, and to the Incarnation as the way in which peace was brought to earth (symbolised by olive branches being passed by angels to men).
NG 1034 is dated 1500 and was probably painted as a private devotional work for a Florentine patron.
