Aeneas, in red, has arrived with his companions on Delos, the home of Apollo. They are shown the sites by its king, Anius, the priest of Apollo. The bearded man in blue is Aeneas\' father, Anchises, and further to the left is his son Ascanius. The king points to a palm and an olive tree, to which Latona clung when she gave birth to Apollo and Diana. The domed building to the right, which recalls the Pantheon, Rome, is the Temple of Apollo. In the upper right a relief illustrates Apollo and Diana killing the giant Tityus who tried to ravish their mother. Virgil, Aeneid, III, 73-82, and Ovid, Metamorphoses, XIII, 630ff.
This composition corresponds with sheet no. 179 in the Liber Veritatis (London, British Museum), the inscription on which indicates the painting to have been made for one Monsieur Dupassy le Gout.
