Fayd\'herbe was a native of Malines and had returned there from Rubens\'s studio in Antwerp by 1640. He was a cousin of the artist and this portrait was probably painted in the 1640s, a date indicated by the costume and by the age of the sitter.
Fayd\'herbe was also portrayed by Coques in one of a series of the Five Senses (NG 1117).
