This picture dates from the earlier part of van Huysum\'s career, that is, before the early 1720s when he began to paint more elaborate and artificial flower-pieces, light in tone and set against light backgrounds, such as NG 796.
A repetition of this composition with slight variations is known (Vienna, Akademie).
