On the left can be seen the Palazzo Balbi, with obelisks on the roof, and beyond it the Palazzo Papadopoli. The buildings on the right include the Palazzo Contarini dalle Figure, the Mocenigo Palazzi, the Palazzo Corner-Spinelli and the Palazzo Grimani. People watch the regatta from windows, balconies and boats moored on the canal. The race is for single-oared gondolas. It may have been part of the carnival festivities because some observers wear the black and white bauta carnival costume. At the extreme left, beside the Palazzo Balbi is the macchina della regatta, a temporary pavilion from which prizes for the races were given; it is decorated with the arms of Doge Alvise Pisani (reigned 1735-41).
NG 938 is dated on stylistic grounds to the early part of the reign of Doge Pisani.
The composition derives from a depiction of the regatta of 1709 by Carlevaris (1663-1730) which was engraved. A number of versions of it associated with Canaletto survive, including an autograph painting also in this Collection, NG 4454.
