The Philistines are crossing the bridge behind the Ark which is pulled by two oxen. It has been miraculously stopped by the stone of Abel and is hailed by a group of Beth-shemites.
NG 64 is inspired in part by the style of the landscapes of Poussin of the later 1640s. According to an inscription on the back of the original canvas the work dates from 1659 and was intended for a \'Mr Thomas\'.
In his Fourteenth Discourse at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1788 Sir Joshua Reynolds referred to this picture as a work \'in which the poetical style of landscape may be seen happily executed\'.
