NG 57 is a modello (oil sketch) for a triptych intended for the high altar of St Bavo, Ghent. The altarpiece was commissioned by Bishop Maes of Ghent in 1611 or 1612, but the patron died in May 1612 and the project was abandoned. In 1623 Rubens was given a new commission for a different work for the site, which remains in the church and incorporates some features from this composition.
