Christ carries his cross to Golgotha (seen in the right background). The Virgin has fainted in his path and is tended by the Holy Women and Saint John. The two thieves are further ahead on the road to Golgotha. New Testament (e.g. John 19: 17). The man on the left with a sword might be the donor of the altarpiece.
NG 806 may be the \'small altarpiece of Christ carrying the cross\' by Boccaccino recorded by Marcantonio Michiel (in a note probably made in the 1520s) in S. Domenico, Cremona. The painting comes from a collection near Cremona and is likely to be the one Michiel mentions, not least because such an altarpiece would probably date from about 1500 which seems right for the style of this work.
A drawing for the figure of the Virgin has been identified in Budapest.
Possibly recorded in S. Domenico, Cremona, by about 1522; certainly in the collection of the Marchese Sommi-Picenardi, near Cremona, by about 1827; bought, 1870.
