Armand-Jean du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu (1585-1642), wears the Order of the Saint-Esprit. The sitter became a cardinal in 1622 and later Chief Minister of France. He is depicted from three angles, because this work was intended to be used by a sculptor, as the basis for a bust, in a similar manner to the way in which Van Dyck\'s Triple Portrait of Charles I (Windsor Castle, Royal Collection), was employed.
According to the inscription on the reverse (see above), the sculptor in question was Francesco Mocchi (1580-1654) and the statue is probably that now at the Musée Lapidaire, Niort. But the issue is confused by the existence of other busts of the cardinal (e.g. Paris, Louvre) which are linked with Bernini. These sculptures have also been connected with NG 798.
