Saint Peter holds two raised keys, one silver, the other gold. These are the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven (New Testament, Matthew 16: 18-19) which were his emblem and were subsequently adopted by the popes, his successors as Bishops of Rome. He also holds a book and a bishop\'s crook surmounted by a crucifix.
NG 788.2 is part of a polyptych signed by Carlo Crivelli and dated 1476 on the step below the Virgin and Child in the central panel. The altarpiece is discussed under NG 788.1, and a reconstruction is on page xxx. NG 788.2 was on the extreme left of the lower tier. When acquired by the Gallery, the altarpiece had a third tier of four smaller full-length saints (NG 788.10-13); these are now acknowledged as parts of a separate altarpiece and are discussed under NG 788.10.
Collection of Prince Anatole Demidoff about 1854; from whose family bought, 1868.
