NG 783 appears to show the second occasion (in 825) when the saint\'s body was exhumed and found to be perfectly preserved. On the left (in blue with a crown) is Louis the Pious, Emperor and King of France; on the right is Walcaudus, Bishop of Liège (810-836).
NG 783 was probably made for the chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert founded in or about 1437 in the church of St Gudula, Brussels (Saint Gudula is shown on the extreme right of the painted altarpiece in the centre of NG 783). It was seen in this chapel by Dubuisson-Aubenay in about 1623. At that time NG 783 formed a diptych with The Dream of Pope Sergius (now Malibu, J. Paul Getty Museum). Van der Weyden himself may have been responsible for some of the heads.
