This 83-year-old woman has recently been identified as Aechje Claesdr. Presser, mother of the Rotterdam brewer Dirck Jansz. Presser, whose portrait, with that of his wife, Rembrandt painted in a similar format in 1634. She wears a black overdress called a vlieger, which is shaped by rounded shoulder coils, or bragoenen. Three gold pins hold together her linen cap.
The oval format of NG 775, which is also used in the other early portraits by the artist in the National Gallery (e.g. NG 850), was fashionable in Amsterdam at the time.
Probably in the Klaas van Winkel sale, Rotterdam, 1791; bought from Lady Eastlake, 1867.
