The Christ Child holds an olive branch in one hand and raises the other in blessing; the Virgin\'s foot is set upon a dead dragon intended to represent the serpent of the Fall, the implication being that the Redemption of Man is possible through the agency of the Virgin, \'the second Eve\'. The tree behind her presumably represents the Tree of Knowledge. The figures are set in an enclosed garden (the hortus conclusus), perhaps intended here as a metaphor for the purity of Mary.
NG 748 was the central panel of a triptych in a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in S. Maria della Scala, Verona. Its commission was connected with an outbreak of the plague in 1510-12 . One wing of the triptych was the Saint Roch by Morando, dated 1518 (NG 735), the other a Saint Sebastian (now missing) painted by Torbido (about 1482-after 1562) - both saints were invoked against the plague.
The altarpiece is referred to by Vasari, 1568; removed from the church of S. Maria della Scala, 1742; bought from the heirs of Cav. Andrea Monga, Verona, 1864.
