The sitter, who has not been identified, rests his hands at the bottom of the picture as though upon a ledge. It has been suggested that he may be wearing livery. To the left through an open window can be seen a landscape with a church.
NG 943 is Bouts\'s earliest dated work and the earliest dated example of a portrait set in a room with a view out of a window, a type which subsequently became popular (see also Petrus Christus NG 2593).
Possibly noted by Marcantonio Michiel, with an attribution to Rogier van der Weyden, in the collection of Giovanni Ram, Venice, 1530/1; Wynn Ellis Bequest, 1876.
