Five angels sing and play lutes, celebrating his birth. Saint Joseph sits on a saddle and two shepherds stand further back, one pointing above, possibly towards the star. The ox and ass are beneath the shelter, upon which a magpie has alighted. The ass appears to be braying, but is probably eating straw (now no longer visible). A goldfinch is identifiable in the left foreground. New Testament (Luke 2: 4-20).
Presumably intended as an altarpiece, and probably a late work by the artist, The Nativity illustrates a familiarity with Netherlandish paintings.
The painting may be unfinished; it is also likely to have been damaged by over-cleaning before acquisition by the Gallery.
