A young soldier wearing armour lies on the ground. A skull and bones are to the left and a smoking lamp hangs above. The work is probably intended as a vanitas - a reminder of the brevity of life and the inconsequential nature of human achievement.
NG 741 has in the past been thought of as a Spanish picture but is now considered more likely to be Italian, and perhaps Neapolitan, in origin.
The composition inspired Manet\'s Dead Toreador (Washington, National Gallery of Art).
