A young soldier wearing armour lies on the ground. A skull and bones are to the left and a smoking lamp hangs above. The work is probably intended as a vanitas - a reminder of the brevity of life and the inconsequential nature of human achievement.
NG 741 has in the past been thought of as a Spanish picture but is now considered more likely to be Italian, and perhaps Neapolitan, in origin.
The composition inspired Manet\'s Dead Toreador (Washington, National Gallery of Art).
In the anon. (Duparc de le Rue and Veuve Laforest) sale, Paris, 20 August 1821 (lot 104); bought at the Pourtalès-Gorgier sale, Paris, 27 March, 1865 (lot 205).
