The letters of the inscription are probably the abbreviated form of \'Alpha et Omega, Principium et Finis\' ([I am] Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end) from the New Testament (Revelation 1: 8).
NG 904 was probably painted in about 1456-60, around the time of Giorgio Schiavone\'s training in the Squarcione workshop in Padua (1456-9). A number of the motifs in the picture are drawn from works by or after Donatello: e.g. the pose and modelling of the Christ Child can be related to a plaquette in the style of Donatello (Washington, National Gallery of Art), and the architectural background has parallels in terracotta casts attributed to Donatello\'s collaborator in Padua, Giovanni da Pisa (e.g. Berlin, Staatliche Museen).
