She was born Susanna Fourment and the artist knew her father, Daniel Fourment, an Antwerp silk and tapestry merchant, for whom he worked. She married Raymond del Monte in 1617, but was soon widowed and in 1622 married Arnold Lunden. In 1630 Rubens married her younger sister Hélène. As there is no securely identified portrait of Susanna, the identification must remain speculative. The traditional title of the painting - Le Chapeau de Paille (The Straw Hat) - inaccurately describes what is actually a felt hat of a type worn by both sexes in the Netherlands in the 1620s. The same sitter was, however, depicted by Rubens on another occasion wearing a straw hat (private collection).
The ring worn by the sitter and her apparent age suggest that this portrait dates from shortly after her second marriage, i.e. 1622-5. It is possibly first recorded in the possession of the family of her second husband.
A life drawing that is probably preparatory to NG 825 survives (Vienna, Albertina). The painting influenced later portraits (notably Lawrence\'s Lady Peel (New York, Frick Collection), and Vigée Le Brun\'s Self Portrait NG 1653).
Possibly Lunden collection by 1639; bought with the Peel collection, 1871.
