The inscriptions are from the Old Testament (Psalms 31: 1 or 71: 1 on the lid of the virginal; Psalms 150: 6 on the inside of the keyboard cover); they occur on virginals in other pictures by Metsu (e.g. Rotterdam, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen); the second inscription appears on a virginal of 1620 in the Musée Instrumental du Conservatoire in Brussels. In the left background is a painting of a Twelfth Night feast; Metsu painted this subject in a similar composition (though reversed) in the early 1650s (Munich, Alte Pinakothek). In the centre background is a landscape in the style of Ruisdael.
