The Virgin, at prayer in her bedchamber, receives the Holy Spirit. The Archangel Gabriel kneels outside with a lily (here a symbol of the Virgin\'s purity). New Testament (Luke 1: 26-35). Unusually Gabriel is accompanied by Saint Emidius, first bishop and patron saint of Ascoli (a model of which he holds). The coats of arms at the base of the picture (left to right) are those of Prospero Caffarelli (Bishop of Ascoli, 1464-1500), Innocent VIII (who succeeded Sixtus IV as Pope in 1484) and the city of Ascoli.
NG 739 was painted for the church of SS. Annunziata in Ascoli Piceno in 1486. The choice of subject, the inscription and the presence of Saint Emidius and the various coats of arms can be explained with reference to contemporary political events. News that Pope Sixtus IV was to grant Ascoli a degree of self-government reached the town on 25 March (the Feast of the Annunciation) 1482. Thereafter they celebrated the freedom granted to them in this Papal Bull - entitled Libertas Ecclesiastica - at the church of SS. Annunziata on the Feast of the Annunciation.
Presented by Lord Taunton, 1864.
