NG 819 was probably painted in the 1680s. There is a preparatory drawing in the Royal Collection.
The old identifications of NG 819 as a view off Deal and as the mouth of the river Thames are incorrect; the coastline is almost certainly imaginary and differs from that shown in the preparatory drawing.
