Saint Michael is one of the seven archangels. He overcame Lucifer (New Testament, Revelation 12: 7-9), who is here symbolically depicted as a decapitated serpent, which the saint tramples under foot. As captain of the heavenly host Michael is conventionally dressed in armour (see Perugino NG 288, Crivelli NG 788), but in this case it is modelled on ancient Roman patterns, although encrusted with jewels. He is crowned with a wreath below his halo and stands before a wall, beyond which is the blue of the sky.
NG 769 was originally placed to the left of the central image in a large single-sided polyptych. Robes which belonged to a figure in the (now lost) principal section encroach at the lower right. The altarpiece was intended for the high altar of Sant\' Agostino, Borgo Sansepolcro. The contract for it, from the Augustinian Friars and Angelo di Giovanni di Simone, is dated 4 October 1454; by November 1469 the commission was completed. In addition to NG 769 the most important surviving fragments from the work are: Saint Augustine (Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga); Saint Peter (New York, Frick Collection); and Saint Nicholas (Milan, Museo Poldi Pezzoli).
