The enthroned figure, pointing to a book, is thought to represent Rhetoric (one of the Seven Liberal Arts).
NG 755 and 756 are parts of a series which probably represented the Seven Liberal Arts of which two others (formerly Berlin, destroyed 1945) represented Astronomy and Dialectic (?) (with a portrait of Federico da Montefeltro). The series may have been made for Federico\'s palace in Gubbio: they were perhaps intended to go above the intarsia panelling (now New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) in his studiolo there. The attribution to Joos depends on comparison with the series of Famous Men painted for the studiolo in the ducal palace at Urbino which appears to have been completed in 1476.
Drawings including a male torso and a horse are on the reverse.
Possibly from the ducal palace at Gubbio; Cosimo Conti, Principe di Trevignano (1809-55), Florence, subsequently William Spence, Florence; from whom bought, 1866.
