NG 726 resembles the version of the same subject by Giovanni Bellini\'s brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna, which was probably painted at an earlier date (NG 1417), but it is also related to a still earlier composition recorded in a drawing by his father Jacopo Bellini. When compared with Mantegna\'s painting Bellini\'s displays a greater sensitivity to natural light.
Probably collection of Consul Smith, Venice, 1770; bought, 1863.
