Saint Veronica (whose name vera icon means true image) wiped Christ\'s face with her veil while he was carrying the cross to Calvary, and an impression of his features was miraculously transferred to the cloth, or sudarium.
NG 687 is similar in style to the painting in Munich (see biography) which gives the artist his name. They are both datable to about 1420. Cleaning has suggested that NG 687 is comparable in quality to the Munich picture, and therefore by the artist himself. It is said to have been in the church of St Lawrence, Cologne, in the early nineteenth century. The church was demolished in 1817.
Bought at the Weyer sale, 1862.
