This is the moment shown by Rubens.
This modello is a preparation for an engraving by Schelte à Bolswert. It records with variations part of a composition used in the central panel of a triptych that Rubens had been commissioned by the Corporation of Fishmongers to paint for the church of Nôtre Dame au delà de la Dyle, Malines, in October 1617. The altarpiece was completed in August 1619. The engraving is undated, but inscribed as bearing the privilege of (i.e. being authorised by) the Regents of the Spanish Netherlands. Archduke Albert died in 1621 and the engraving and modello must have been made before his death.
The composition in part recalls Raphael\'s tapestry cartoon of the subject (Royal Collection, on loan to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London).
