The painting may be a fragment of a larger altarpiece - a low viewpoint seems to be expected and the forms are both monumental and the composition highly centralised, which supports this idea.
NG 728 was probably painted relatively early in Boltraffio\'s career and is a variant of the so called nLitta Madonna\' by Leonardo of which the original is probably the painting in St Petersburg (Hermitage). The figure of the Christ Child reappears in a similar pose in a painting by an unidentified follower of Leonardo, NG 1300.
