The altarpiece represents the Virgin and Child enthroned with Saints Jerome and Sebastian but is named after the swallow (rondine in Italian) perched above, which may be intended as a symbol of the Resurrection. Saint Jerome (about 342-420) appears in the main panel as a doctor of the church in the red habit of a cardinal. Saint Sebastian, another fourth-century saint, is shown as a young warrior. The predella (NG 724.1) includes Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, the Nativity at Night and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. At either end are Saint Catherine of Alexandria, with her traditional attribute of a wheel, and Saint George in combat with the dragon.
The painting come from the church of S. Francesco dei Zoccolanti in Matelica, and bears the arms of the Ottoni family. Ranuzio Ottoni (Lord of Matelica) and Giorgio di Giacomo (guardian of the local convent of S. Francesco) commissioned the altarpiece in March 1490. The former paid 60 ducats towards the cost of this commission; the latter paid 310 florins.
The painting is in its original frame (see Appendix B for a larger reproduction).
Recorded in S. Francesco dei Zoccolanti, Matelica, by 1796; bought, 1862.
