She discovered his true identity by lamplight but a drop of the lamp\'s oil woke Cupid. For disobeying him Psyche was abandoned, and attempted to drown herself. Apuleius, The Golden Ass, IV-VI. It is thought that Claude has depicted Psyche brooding over the decision whether or not to murder Cupid.
NG 6471 was executed in 1664 for Prince Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna. The composition corresponds with sheet no. 162 of the Liber Veritatis (London, British Museum). Claude painted a pendant for it - Landscape with Psyche saved from drowning herself (Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz Museum) - in 1665.
Preparatory drawings survive (London, private collection; Chantilly, Musée Condé; Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle). The title nThe Enchanted Castle\' dates from William Woollett\'s engraving of 1782. It is thought John Keats referred to NG 6471 in his Ode to a Nightingale.
