La Grenouillère was a floating café and bathing place on the banks of the Seine near Bougival, west of Paris. It was popular with locals and day trippers in the late 1860s.
Monet worked alongside Renoir at La Grenouillère in the summer of 1869. The works that they produced there are often celebrated as important documents in the history of Impressionism, introducing the qualities of immediacy and directness that became the basis of their subsequent work. It is possible that NG 6456 and a related composition in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, were painted as sketches for a more ambitious and finished composition that Monet may have intended to execute back in his studio.
