The drinking-horn of the Amsterdam Guild of Archers was made in 1565; it is now in the city\'s Historisch Museum. Kalf\'s depiction varies slightly from the original, but generally follows its appearance. It is made from a buffalo horn set in a silver mount, the foot of which shows Saint Sebastian bound to a tree. The horn also appears in paintings by Metsu and van der Helst.
NG 6444 was presumably commissioned by a member of the guild. It was painted at about the same time as the Still Life with Porcelain Jug, Roemer and Fruit of 1653 (Munich, Alte Pinakothek).
Kalf also painted a variant in an upright format in which the composition is extended at the bottom (formerly New York, collection of K. Lilienfeld). Comparable arrangements of glasses, lobsters and fruit can be found in other works by the artist.
Possibly recorded in the inventory of the Amsterdam wine dealer Arnout Stevens, 1706; bequeathed by R.S. Newall, 1978.
