Doubts have in the past been raised about the attribution of NG 6389, but most scholars now accept it as autograph. The very sharp contrasts of dark and light apparent here are characteristic of Caravaggio\'s late works. The picture is perhaps the one referred to by Bellori as having been sent by the artist from Naples to Malta after he had fled from the island.
