Venus appears to have given birth to a boy, probably Aeneas and not Cupid, as he has no wings. The boy is held by Time, who is represented with his attributes of scythe and hourglass. A winged Cupid with a quiver of arrows appears below Time. The Three Graces appear above on Venus\' chariot; they seem to be dropping flowers onto the figures below.
NG 6387 was painted for a ceiling, almost certainly in the Ca\' Contarini, Venice (where the picture is recorded in June 1758). NG 6387 was etched in reverse by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo as the work of his father. The ceiling picture may have been painted to celebrate a birth in the Contarini family; the boy has strongly individualised features and may be a portrait in the guise of the classical hero Aeneas. In 1876 NG 6387 was recorded together with four allegorical roundels which may represent the virtues and qualities to be hoped for in an heir.
A drawing probably related to NG 6387 exists in New York (Metropolitan Museum of Art).
