Saint Paul stands centrally, while the other disciples on the platform are carrying out various actions, including giving thanks, dispensing alms, hearing confession and blessing the converts.
NG 6299 is a modello for a painting that Le Sueur executed in 1649 for the cathedral of Notre-Dame, Paris (now Paris, Louvre). This work was a so-called \'May\' painting, a votive picture given annually (1630-1707) to the cathedral by the Paris goldsmiths. Another identical modello (Algiers, Musée National des Beaux-Arts) and several preparatory drawings (e.g. Paris, Louvre) are known. In the final painting there were numerous changes from the modello: the kneeling man being blessed to the right of the saint was omitted; the confessing figure at the extreme right was transformed, and the disciple behind him instead of dispensing charity points to where the books were to be burnt.
