Three Israelite soldiers broke through the ranks of the Philistines who were besieging them, in order to satisfy King David\'s frivolous desire for some water from Bethlehem, which is situated beyond the camp in the landscape at the left. On their return he refused to drink, declaring that the water was \'... the blood of the men that wentin jeopardy of their lives\'. Old Testament (2 Samuel 23: 13-17). The moment depicted is that at which David rejects the water offered to him in a helmet.
NG 6 corresponds with Liber Veritatis drawing no. 145 (London, British Museum), the inscription on which shows the painting to have been made for Prince Agostino Chigi (1634-1705), a nephew of Pope Alexander VII and captain of the papal guards. The nature of the subject was appropriate in view of the patron\'s military career. It was hung by the patron as a pendant to Salvator Rosa\'s Mercury, Argus and Io (Kansas City, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art).
Painted for Agostino Chigi, 1658; Holwell Carr Bequest, 1831.
