Saint John the Baptist is identified by the camel skin he wore in the desert and the inscription on his scroll from the New Testament (John 1: 29). Saint John the Evangelist is accompanied by his traditional attribute of an eagle, and is shown with a book as is conventional for an evangelist.
NG 587 was the left wing of an altarpiece, of which NG 588 was the right wing. Both panels were once thought to have come from the same ensemble as NG 586.1-3. However, they are slightly smaller than the wings of NG 586, have a different figure scale and rounded tops (whereas the wings of NG 586 have pointed tops). Moreover, pentaptychs were uncommon in Florence around 1470, and would have been particularly unlikely on the small lateral altars of S. Spirito, Florence. On the other hand, it has been observed that - as in NG 586, which may come from the Augustinian church of S. Spirito, Florence - the saints include Augustinians, and the step on which the saints stand is similar in both sets of wings.
Possibly in the church of S. Spirito, Florence; Lombardi-Baldi collection, Florence, by 1845; from where bought, 1857.
