NG 5594 is connected stylistically with a group of works (now mainly in the Lisbon Museum) attributed to Frei Carlos, a painter of Netherlandish extraction who took monastic vows at the Convento do Espinheiro at Evora in 1517. No documentation links the artist with these paintings, but they are generally associated with his name. It has been suggested that he may have been the master of a workshop in the monastery.
Said to have been in the possession of the O\'Neil family, Portugal, since the mid-eighteenth century; sent to London for sale by George O\'Neil of Lisbon, and bought by Herbert Cook, 1906; bought from the Cook collection, 1945.
