The Virgin is seated in a walled garden (the hortus conclusus) and suckles the Christ Child. The ruined arch and the sea visible beyond are unusual features. God the Father appears in the sky above the central group. The iris, to the left of the Virgin, is a flower often associated with her (it is a symbol of the sword of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin), as is the rose to the right of her hand. The vine might be intended to have eucharistic significance.
NG 5592 was probably painted by an artist in imitation of the style of Dürer, possibly after his death. It is unlikely to have been intended as a forgery, and the false monogram and date appear to have been added later.
