Painted as a grisaille (a work of varying tones, but a single colour), NG 5583 is intended as an imitation of a mounted engraving, although the subject does not duplicate that of any known print.
The artist exhibited a painting at the 1799 Salon in Paris (no. 28), the description of which matches the design of NG 5583, but other contemporary descriptions suggest that the Salon work was not a grisaille, so it is likely that NG 5583 derives from it.
