The boys holds up an eel while the girl pulls the cat\'s tail and gestures to the spectator. This probably refers to a Dutch proverb, either \'To hold an eel by the tail\' (meaning that because you have something you cannot necessarily hold onto it) or \'He is as happy as an eel\' (meaning he is uncontrollable). In Dutch painting of this period children are often used to point up the foolishness of adults and this may be the case here.
