A young woman, apparently unaware that she is being observed, wades into the water. On the bank beside her is a rich robe. The model for the woman is probably Hendrickje Stoffels (about 1625-63) who in 1654 was admonished by the Reformed Church in Amsterdam for living with the artist \'like a whore\', and bore him a daughter called Cornelia in October that year. The identification cannot be confirmed as there is no documented portrait of Hendrickje, but the same woman appears in a group of works of this period (see NG 6432). The robe suggests that she might here be in the guise of an Old Testament heroine, such as Susanna or Bathsheba, or the goddess Diana, who were spied upon by men while bathing.
NG 54 displays remarkable spontaneity and freedom in the handling of the paint. It appears unfinished in some parts but was clearly finished to Rembrandt\'s satisfaction as he signed and dated it. Its size and support might suggest that it was a sketch for a larger history painting but, unlike Rubens, Rembrandt did not usually make preliminary oil sketches for larger projects.
Possibly in the Andrew Hale sale, London, 1739; Holwell Carr Bequest, 1831.
