Margaretha de Geer (1583-1672) was the wife of the wealthy Dordrecht merchant Jacob Trip (1575-1661). The couple were depicted by Rembrandt in a pair of portraits in the National Gallery (NG 1674 and 1675). In the present portrait the sitter wears the same peaked head-dress and millstone ruff as in NG 1675 but is shown closer to half-length and with her body turned slightly to the left (compared to the frontal, more formal pose of the other portrait).
The exact relationship between the two portraits of Margaretha de Geer is unclear because certain technical features of this work make it impossible to be certain that it was painted by Rembrandt himself, rather than by a follower. It is either a more freely painted variant by Rembrandt of the larger picture, based upon the same series of sittings and intended for another member of the Trip family, or a skilful imitation of the artist\'s work painted before 1818 when it was in the collection of Lord Townsend.
